Shirley's Fried Chicken, and Steve's Birthday Dinner

We are on vacation so I haven't been posting.  I'm not really in my kitchen, after all!

But here is the birthday dinner we had for Steve before we left.  It's his favorite meal, and I only make it a few times a year because it has all the fat, sodium, and carb content for about a month.

But oh, is it good.

Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, and Green Beans.  Only Green Giant Kitchen Sliced Green   Beans will do.

I've covered mashed potatoes before, and with the green beans you add a bunch of butter, salt and pepper, and simmer away.

This post will focus on fried chicken, the way Steve's Mom Shirley made it.  All you need is chicken (drumsticks for Steve), flour, Johnny's Seasoning, and Crisco.  There may be fancier, ways to fry it up, or recipes that use buttermilk and other seasonings.  But this is the way Shirley made it, and this is the way I make it.

I carefully watched her one day.  All she did was sprinkle Johnny's over the chicken, coat in flour then shake it off, then sprinkled more Johnny's over it!

Crisco went into the the electric frypan, and melted at around 375 Fahrenheit.  Once it was melted it was hot enough to add the chicken and brown for a few minutes on each side.

Don't crowd it, you don't want it to steam.  Next, just lower the heat to around 300, cover, and set a timer for 15 minutes.  Then turn the chicken.

Generally Shirley did this for an hour.  15 minutes, turn, 15 minutes turn, and so on.

Remove to a paper towel lined plate and you have dinner!  Fall off the bone delicious.  Not the prettiest picture!
